The single largest determinant of how a private cinema sounds is the room's dimensions, construction and treatment. A modest speaker package in a correctly proportioned, isolated and treated room outperforms a flagship system in an untreated cube — every time, measurably.

That is why the room shell, isolation strategy and treatment budget should be locked before the equipment schedule is written.

Immersive layout and calibration

  • Choose the channel layout from the room geometry and seat count, not from the receiver's maximum spec.
  • Overhead speakers need a genuine, structurally supported ceiling plane — not a compromise into a beam.
  • Multiple subwoofers, positioned by measurement, outperform one larger subwoofer in a corner.
  • Calibrate by measurement (level, distance, crossover, target curve) and issue the before/after plots as a deliverable.
  • Video: set peak white, gamma/EOTF and colour to the room's actual ambient light, with a printed calibration report.
  • Lighting must be dimmable, glare-free and scene-linked; ambient light ruins contrast faster than a cheaper projector does.

Handover checklist
