What makes an auditorium AV system actually work?
Sightlines, intelligibility, and operator workflow — in that order. A flagship auditorium delivers consistent sound at every seat, readable visuals from the back row, and a control surface a non-engineer can run on event day.
How to picture it.
Plan view: speaker coverage map, sightline cones, control booth ergonomics.
From the field.
An institutional auditorium of 720 seats was failing intelligibility tests in the rear third. We redesigned the line array, retuned the room and shortened the operator workflow from 14 steps to 4. Speech intelligibility scores moved into the 'excellent' band.
What to take away.
- 1Speech intelligibility is the real KPI.
- 2Design for the volunteer operator, not the AV engineer.
- 3Lock the rigging early.
Quick follow-ups.
Line array or point source?+
Depends on seat count and room depth — both are correct in the right room.
How long does commissioning take?+
1–3 weeks for a serious auditorium.
